Rhododendron Walk and Talk

Beth Gutwin, Curator of the Rhododendron Collection, will give a slide presentation and lead a walking tour of the Hort. Farm's acclaimed collection of Rhododendrons and native Azaleas. Come learn about the cultural requirements and landscape uses of these plants, and see a spectacular display of blooms. Tea and refreshments will be served after. Members $10 Non-members $15 EMG-E

Sessions 1 & 2: Illustrator Jean Carlson Masseau will teach observation skills to facilitate the process of drawing botanical subjects from life, and the basics of painting with watercolor paints. A review of historical and contemporary botanical art and Jean’s professional samples will provide insight into the planning, drawing and painting process. Working with fresh or dried flowers, students will achieve a likeness in pencil before painting parts of their subject in watercolor. In-depth information will be shared in a supportive atmosphere.
Session 3: Students will learn Jean’s “quick capture” techniques for drawing in the field, and review a variety of ideas for page composition before venturing outside for a fun drawing session at the Horticulture Farm. This course is offered as a three part program. Individual classes are not available. Class limit is 12 List of materials that students will need to bring will be supplied.
